Don't let your Hallowe’en turn into a road safety nightmare

The road safety department of Mayo County Council is reminding trick or treaters that the major dangers at Hallowe’en are not from ghosts and goblins, but rather pedestrian/vehicle collisions. To date this year 28 pedestrians have been killed on Irish roads. 

'In-vest’ road safety campaign

In an innovative way to increase the number of pedestrians and cyclists wearing high visibility clothing, Mayo County Council and An Garda Síochána have teamed up in a community initiative aimed at encouraging more pedestrians and cyclists to make sure that they can be clearly seen on the roads at night. Vests have been distributed to stations right around the county.

Councillors moot two-way traffic system in Westport

Westport town manager Peter Hynes has said that the issue surrounding traffic in the town — which was discussed during a special meeting of Westport Town Council — is being examined, but as the town “was not designed for the car in mind” it will always mean that it will take some time in order to pass through the town. However if Westport is shortlisted for the Smarter Town Travel scheme and is in receipt of funding Mr Hynes said that cars will eventually be replaced by a larger uptake of people cycling and walking in the town, which will help alleviate traffic problems.

Second drink driving conviction for retired Castlebar man

A 72-year-old retired man who was followed by gardaí after he stopped in the middle of a roundabout, drove in the middle of two traffic lanes, made a sharp left at another roundabout without indication — where he almost hit the traffic islands — and when stopped failed a roadside breath test, was disqualified from driving for four years at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.

Operation Bicycle Light is designed to improve safety in rural and urban areas and educate vulnerable road users in the need to be seen in order to be safe on Irish roads. Vulnerable road users include pedal cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists.

Woman jumped to safety from out-of-control car, jury hears

The jury in a trial heard yesterday how a young woman narrowly avoided being crushed by an out-of-control vehicle by leaping into a stairwell and then cowering from a shower of broken car parts.
